Alex Gaines Nelms, Jr.

Mr. Alex Gaines Nelms, Jr., 85, of Kathwood Drive, Elberton, husband of 52 years to the late Patsy Jean Sanders Nelms, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2019, at his residence.

Mr. Nelms was born in Bowman on October 27, 1934, son of the late Alex Gaines Nelms, Sr. and Lula Scoggins Nelms. He was a diamond saw operator having retired from Coggins Granite Company after 40 plus years of service and a self-employed painter. Alex was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. "Papa" enjoyed watching westerns on television, cutting grass, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children: Debbie Lynn Sanchez of Elberton and Mitchell Keith Nelms of Killeen, TX; grandchildren: Brandon William Horton of Athens and Niki and Blake Ingram of Elberton; and great-granddaughter, Ava.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, December 17, at 11:30 from the graveside in Elmhurst Cemetery with Mr. Keith Ingram officiating.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 10:00-11:00a.m. on Tuesday prior to the service.
