Betty Jane Carter

Mrs. Betty Jane Leard Carter, 85, resident of Elm Street, Elberton, entered into rest on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Elbert Memorial Hospital while surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

A lifelong resident of Elberton, Betty was born on August 17, 1932, daughter of the late George Adams Leard and Annie Lucille Chaffin Leard. She was a graduate of Elberton High School and North Georgia College. Betty spent most of her working years in the granite industry, having co-owned Guest Granite Company, later working at Brown Transport, and retiring from Hunter Granite Company. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Elberton and the church’s Lydia Sunday School Class. “Mimi”, as she was known by her family, loved spending time with her grandchildren, square dancing, and was happiest when playing in the dirt in her flower gardens.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughters: Carol Carter Becton and her husband Tim and Carla Carter Trogdon and her husband Curt; longtime companion, Faine Berryman and his son Brian; sister, Mary George Ooley; grandchildren: Carter, Brittany, T.J., Connor, Georgia, Grayson; great-grandchildren: Channing, Cohen, Audrey, Jayla, and Jayce; in-laws: Marilyn and Charles Heard, Beth Vaughter, Wendell and Patti Berryman, Joy and John Jordan, Robert McMurray, and Peggy Berryman; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands: PFC George C. “Bill” Crawford, Jr., who was killed in action during the Korean War, and Carl Edward Carter; daughter, Caryn Carter Wright; and granddaughter, Missy Wright.

Funeral services celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Friday, March 30, at 11 o’clock at First Baptist Church of Elberton with the Revs. Gary Purvis and Allyson Strong Helvie officiating, and the Revs. Raymond Scott and Jim McCullough assisting. Betty will lie instate for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

The family is at the residence on Elm Street and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00p.m. on Thursday evening, March 29.
