Mr. Billy Joe Benton, 76, of North Eades Road, Carlton, husband of Martha Ann Adams Benton, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2015, at his residence. Mr. Benton was born on May 23, 1939, in Elbert County to the late Roy Charlie and George Will McClain Benton. He was retired from Elberton Mills as a quill technician and later worked at Elberton Country Club. He and his brother owned and operated Benton Brothers Grocery in Carlton for many years. Billy was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran, a member of New Town Baptist Church, and an avid hunter and fisherman. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Martha Ann Adams Benton of the home; sisters: Emma Jean Copper and Betty Guest, both of Carlton; brother-in-law, James Adams and his wife Rhonda of Elberton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and lots of friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers: J.M., Charles, Emory, Luther, and G.W. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, December 26, at 2 o'clock in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Derek Paul officiating. Interment will follow in Glade Cemetery with Rev. John Guest officiating. The family is at the residence and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 12 o'clock until the service hour on Saturday.
