Brent Leland Phillips, 31, of Norris Webb Drive, Elberton, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2013, at his residence with his family at his side, after a courageous two year battle with frontotemporal dementia. Mr. Phillips was born in Elbert County, June 23, 1981, to Barry Phillips and Barbara Burry Bennett. Brent graduated from Elbert County Comprehensive High School in 1999 and from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education in 2005. He was a Fifth Grade Teacher at Beaverdam Elementary School and was a Rams Football Coach at Elbert County Middle School. He was a member of Elberton Christian Church. Left to cherish his memories are his devoted wife and caretaker, Merci Luke Phillips of the home; two daughters and the lights of his life, Georgia Lynn Phillips and Amelia Sydney Phillips, both of the home; parents, Barry Phillips and Barbara Bennett and her husband Gary, all of Elberton; sisters, Blair Burdette and her husband Rusty and Corbin Bennett, all of Elberton; grandmothers, Sarah Nell “Sabie” Phillips and Mary Lou Burry, both of Greenville, SC and Edith Howard of Florida; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sid and Kathy Luke of Elberton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 9, after 5:00p.m. in Elberton Christian Church. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Monday, June 10, at 2:00p.m. in the Elberton Christian Church officiated by the Revs. Bill Eaton and Jay Akin. Interment will follow in the Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Rusty Burdette, Jay Anderson, Tony Ombogo, Bob Thomas, Justin Turner, Travis Tilley, Brad Brown, and Tra Dumit. The Phillips family is at the residence on Norris Webb Drive. The family has requested that those attending the visitation and service wear red and black casual attire, and dress as if you were attending a Georgia Bulldogs Football Game.
