Charles Gladwin Merritt, Jr.

Mr. Charles Gladwin Merritt, Jr., 85, of Elberton, GA, husband of 61 years to Dorothy Faye Price Merritt, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at his residence. 

Mr. Merritt was born in Nashville, GA on December 28, 1934 and was raised in Fitzgerald, GA. He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a jet engine mechanic for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft.  Charles was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Calhoun Falls and loved fishing and water skiing. He was an avid horseman and was always active in any events in which his girls were involved. 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three daughters: Leslie and Bob Law of Tolland, CT, Lori and Thom VanTuinen of Palm City, FL, and Lisa and Bob Wright of Stuart, FL; grandchildren: Rebecca and Paul Powers of Vernon, CT, Benjamin Law who is stationed in San Diego, CA with the US Navy, Austin Wright of Stuart, FL, and Charlie Wright of Stuart, FL; great-grandchildren: Amelia, Abby, and Gavin Powers; siblings: Jack and Rosemarie Merritt of Summerfield, FL, Jimmy and Judy Merritt of Hilliard, FL, Larry Merritt of Middleburg, FL, and Bonnie and Richard Carney of Pulatka, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Gladwin Merritt, Sr. and Ruby Lorraine McMillan Merritt; and sister, Dianne Merritt. 

Memorial services celebrating Charles’s life will be held at Northside Baptist Church in Calhoun Falls on Saturday, November 7, with the Rev. DeWayne Lambeth officiating. Due to the coronavirus, the service will be private for the family. Burial will be in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville at a later date.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to Northside Baptist Church, 201 Marion Street, Calhoun Falls, SC 29628.
