CMSgt Ernest Douglas Dixon, U.S. Air Force, Retired, 88, devoted husband of Martha ‘Marie’ Hyde Dixon for 66 years, passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at his residence in Elberton, Georgia.

Born on April 14, 1933, in Elberton, he was a son of the late Ernest R. Dixon and Ailine S. Algood Dixon. He was also preceded in death by his brothers-in-law: Jerry Ray, Vernon Wansley, Mac Hyde, William Hyde, and Earl Hyde; sisters-in-law: Laura Wansley, Kathryn Hyde, and Doris Hyde Wheeler; and nieces: Lynne Hyde WIlson and Jeanna Montgomery.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years and achieved the highest rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He traveled the world defending our country, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Around the retirement community he was known as “chief” and greeted with a respectful solute. Following his military service, he worked for Ryder Systems for 23 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elberton. He was also a life-long sports fan who enjoyed rooting for the Braves and Bulldogs. He devoted his spare time to veterans in need through the Wounded Warrior Project. A devoted father and grandfather, he was known as “Papa” to those who loved him and deeply impacted their lives.

Along with his wife, survivors include his children: Mike Dixon (Andrea), Jenny Hill (Bill), Dave Dixon (Kathy), and Phil Dixon (Ollie); daughter-in-law, Carol Dixon; sister, Gloria Ray (Steve Seawright); grandchildren: Brian (Andrea) Hill, Andrew Dixon, Jennifer Hill, Keith Dixon, Hayden Dixon, Alex Dixon, Sara Dixon, Rachel Dixon, and Ryan Dixon; great-grandchildren: Tyler Hill and Emma Kate Hill; nieces and nephews: Terri Ray, Shane Ray, Jeff Hyde, Patti McLanahan, Bonnie Hutto, Jane Ann Hofman, Karen Baugh, Greg Baugh, Christina Trexler, Janice Madden, and Belinda Thomas.

Funeral services are scheduled at First Baptist Church, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, Georgia on Friday January 7, 2022. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. with a service to follow at 11:00 A.M. Entombment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.
