Eleanor Laney Lingle, 92, longtime Elberton resident and member of the First Presbyterian Church, passed away in her home Wednesday, May 30, 2012. She was the beloved wife of Lt. Col. Arnold Hamilton Lingle, Sr. USA-Ret., dear mother of Cindy (Margaret Lingle Henk), Lizanne (Elizabeth Anne Lingle Oliver), Wilma (Wilma Lula Lingle), and Arnie (Arnold Hamilton Lingle, Jr.), and loving mother-in-law of Bill Henk, Fred Oliver, and Dennis O’Kane. Born in Monroe, North Carolina on March 18, 1920, she was married to Arnold Lingle on March 25, 1943. She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 11, 1974, and by her 7 brothers and 1 sister. She is survived by her 4 children; grandchildren, Adam Henk, Daniel Henk, and Rebecca Oliver; and 4 great-grandchildren, Taran and Kasia Henk, Alexander Henk, and Matthew Oliver. As a military family, the Lingles resided in a number of states and Okinawa, Japan prior to moving to Elberton in 1960. During her lifetime, she was a choir member and treasurer of the Women of the Church for many years at the First Presbyterian Church. She retired from the Dept. of Family and Children Services after 15 years and remained active as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. An enthusiastic card player, she was a member of several bridge clubs and enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble at family gatherings. Well into her 70’s, she was an avid recreational walker, who placed first in her age division in the 2nd Rock & Run 5K event on July 27, 1996. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 154 S. McIntosh Street, Elberton, at 1 pm on Sunday, June 10, with Rev. Mike Woods officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Eleanor Lingle’s honor to gentivahospicefoundation.org, Salvation Army, or Athens Regional Medical Center Guest House, 1199 Prince Ave., Athens, Georgia 30606.
