Fred Herndon

Mr. Fred Herndon, 91, of Highland Avenue, Elberton, husband of 21 years to Verdun Lyle Johnson Herndon, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014, at his residence while under the wonderful care of Gentiva Hospice. Mr. Herndon was born in Elbert County on April 26, 1923, to the late George and Clara Burdette Herndon. Fred proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Radar Operator during WWII. He was a member of Bethel E Baptist Church, Elberton Elks Lodge, and the Elberton VFW where he served as commander for several years. Mr. Herndon owned and operated both Herndon Granite Company and Granite City Acoustical. Fred throughly enjoyed camping and trout fishing in the mountains with his beloved Verdun, watching NASCAR races, and spending time with the light of his life, youngest granddaughter, Jamie. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Verdun Lyle Johnson Herndon of the home; children and their spouses: Johnny Herndon of Elberton, Michael and Lynn Herndon of Bowman, Trudy and Jerry King, Tammy Fortson and Ronald Hall, and Laura and Mark Carrington, all of Elberton; grandchildren and their spouses: Nathan and Hannah Herndon, Anna and Jason Terrell, Brooke and Kevin Campos, Marty and Jean King, Mendy and Travis Christian, and Jamie Carrington; nine great-grandchildren; special caretaker, Ronnie Hughes; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers: George Frank Herndon, Milton Herndon, and William "Bill" Herndon. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, August 23, at 11:00a.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Sharon Coley and Chaplain Benson Bottoms officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery at a later date. The family is at the residence and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 10:00a.m. until the service hour on Saturday morning.
