Harold Adams

Mr. Emory ‘Harold’ Adams, age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, October 9, 2016, at his residence on Highland Drive in Elberton, while holding the hand of his beloved wife of 73 1/2 years, Mrs. Doris Dallis Adams.

Mr. Adams was born in the Pendergrass Community of Jackson County on July 27, 1920, the youngest son of the late James Gus Adams, Sr. and Dessie Reynolds Adams. He was a 1938 graduate of Jackson County High School in Mayesville. In 1942, he met a beautiful young schoolteacher, and eight short months later, on April 4, 1943, Miss Doris D. Dallis of Lincolnton, became his wife. Following their marriage, Harold and Doris lived in both Savannah and Atlanta before settling in Elberton where he joined the First Baptist Church and became a very successful entrepreneur in the business community. He was best known as owner/operator of Big Hearted Harold’s Appliance and Furniture Store. In 1984, he retired and sold the business to his nephew who continues to operate it today as Norman’s Appliances. At First Baptist Church, Mr. Adams was a past deacon, former Sunday School teacher, former head of the Junior Department, and former training union director. He was a former member of Philomathea Masonic Lodge # 25, and enjoyed woodworking and growing tomatoes. Harold served Elberton as a City Councilman for 11 years.

He will be remembered as the loving husband of Mrs. Doris Dallis Adams of the residence and devoted father of Connie Adams DeLoach of Martinez. He was a wonderful grandfather to Chris DeLoach, his wife Kari, and their children Emory (his namesake) and Aubrey; and Cheri DeLoach Williams, her husband Mike, and their children Kate and Evan. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by four siblings: James G. Adams, Jr., Marvin Adams, Bertie Brooks, and Ann Mabry.

The funeral service honoring the life of Harold Adams will be held on Tuesday, October 11, at 11 o’clock in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Dr. Jimmy Elder and Rev. Gary Purvis officiating. Entombment will be in the family mausoleum in Elberton’s Historic Elmhurst Cemetery.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 10:00-10:45a.m. on Tuesday prior to the service.
