Helen Marie Phillips Garner

Mrs. Helen Marie Phillips Garner, 68, of Moon Road, Bowman, wife of 51 years to Charles Ray Garner, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 30, 2021, at her residence.

Helen was born in Elberton on November 26, 1952, daughter of the late Jonah Baxter Phillips and Chester White Phillips, and retired from the State of Georgia Department of Human Services after many years of service. Mrs. Garner was an active member of Deep Creek Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, WMU director, Acteens director, and girls in action director. Helen always had an encouraging message to others that she shared on the church sign. She was always smiling and finding a way to help others.

Survivors, in addition to her husband Ray, include her daughter: Stephanie Garner Benson and her husband Jeff of Bowman; granddaughters: Kelsey Thomas Menendez and her husband Gabe and Hayden Marie Benson; sisters: Martha Phillips, Joyce Bradford, and Loretta (Lamar) Freeman; siblings-in-law: Homer Webb, Lynda Phillips, Mary Helen Phillips, Brenda (Junior) Scarborough, Beverly Woods, Dale Garner (Tammy), Ricky Garner, and David Garner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Chad Mitchell Garner; siblings: Clyde (Gladys) Phillips, Arthur (Vivian) Phillips, Noah (JoAnn) Phillips, Lillie Mae Webb, Leon Phillips, and Jimmy Phillips; brother-in-law, Dean Bradford; and sisters-in-law: Anna Simmons and Myrtle Mealor.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Monday, May 3, at 11 o’clock at Deep Creek Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Face masks are required.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends at the church from 10:00-10:45a.m. prior to the service on Monday.
