Howard Eugene West

Mr. Howard Eugene West, simply known as “West”, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2023, at PruittHealth in Toccoa. He was 91 years old and a longtime resident of the Rehoboth Community in Bowman.

Born in Selina, Clayton County, on June 18, 1931, he was a 1949 graduate of Campbell High School in Fairburn. He was a truck driver having driven for Consolidated Auto Carrier in Atlanta before moving to Bowman. West then went to work for Argo Trucking Company and Martin Fire Proofing before going to work for Savannah Valley Gas Company in 1972. He ultimately retired from Drake Gas Company as manager of the Elberton plant.

West was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed wood working and spending time working in his flower gardens. West enjoyed cutting firewood and practicing his skills as a diesel mechanic working on tractors.

Survivors include his children and their spouses: Jean and Walter Pruitt of Toccoa, Rayne and Jerry Maxwell of Greenwood, SC, and Hall and Maranda West of Bowman; siblings: Jeanette Ayers of Grantville, Vernon and Nancy West of Fayetteville, David and Lynn West of Tyrone, Harvey and Diane West of Fayetteville, Mildred Callahan of Fayetteville, and Faye and Kail Goplin of St. Louis, MO; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Faye Harriet Hall West; and siblings: Harold West and Ann Brooks.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends on Thursday, January 5, from 1:00-1:45p.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 o’clock in the church sanctuary. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
