Mr. Jerry Goss Hewell, 81, died peacefully on Sunday, November 11, 2018, at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Dewy Rose, Jerry was born on July 17, 1937, the only child of the late Ora Harold Hewell and Alice Katrina Bond Hewell. He was a member of Dewy Rose Baptist Church and a Veteran having served in the Georgia Army National Guard. He was also a former member of the Elberton Moose Lodge where he served as secretary.
In addition to being a cattle farmer, Jerry was a well known and respected funeral director, having served Elberton and the surrounding area since 1958. Forty four years of service to Hicks Funeral Home and sixteen to Berry Funeral Home totaled sixty years of faithful service to his community.
His love of community and serving people led him to run and be elected as an Elbert County Commissioner, a position he held proudly for two terms.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Taylor Hewell, whom he proudly married on December 5, 1964, at First United Methodists Church, Elberton; and numerous friends.
Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by his parents-in-law, C.E and Annie Lou Fricks Taylor.
At Jerry’s request, there will be no service or visitation. Burial will be private in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Those wishing to express their condolences may do so by signing the guestbook which will be available at Berry Funeral Home until Friday, November 23.
