Jerry Micheal King

Mr. Jerry Micheal King, longtime resident of Elberton and husband of Trudy Johnson King, finished his course on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at his home after a brief illness. He was 72.

Mr. King was born in Elberton on May 26, 1945, to Van Wesley King and Norine Martha Turner King. He was a 1963 graduate of Madison County High School and a U.S. Army Veteran having served during Vietnam. Jerry was Trudy’s “gentle giant” for nearly 54 years, 51 1/2 of which were spent married. His devotion to his family can be traced back to Marty’s youth when traveling as a family to watch Marty play sports anywhere he went. “Pops” continued this tradition once Matthew and Katie came along, making sure he was always there to support them in their endeavors.

From farming together in rural Elbert County to founding King’s Monument Company in 1984, Jerry and Trudy were blessed to spend the majority of their married years working together. Jerry was a self-made man who always did things the right way, and encouraged his family and employees to do the same. He loved working together with his family and considered his employees an extension of his own family. Mr. King took pride in providing quality work to the many customers he was privileged to serve. Jerry’s dedication to the granite industry was shown through his work with Elberton Granite Association, an organization he worked tirelessly for as a 3 term Trustee and eventually as a 2 term President, as well as Granite Sales and Supply, where he was also served as President.

Jerry’s servant heart also found him as a dedicated member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board, served on the Board of Trustees, served as Trustee of the Number 2 Cemetery Fund, and was a member of the choir and Men’s Club. He was also a member of Elberton Moose Lodge where he was Governor for two years, Elberton Elks Lodge, and Elberton Country Club.

Surviving are his wife, Trudy, of Elberton; son, Marty and Jean King of Watkinsville; grandchildren: Matthew and Katie; niece, Mendy and Travis Christian; sisters-in-law: Tammy Fortson, Laura Carrington, and Anna Turner; several other nieces and nephews; and the staff of King’s Monument Company.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his half brother, Norman Turner.
