Larry Ulysses Johnson

Mr. Larry Ulysses Johnson, age 81, lifelong resident of the Glade Community in Oglethorpe County, answered his final call on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Nancy Hart Nursing Center in the Fortsonia Community of Elberton.

Larry was born at home in the Glade Community on April 24, 1942, the youngest child and only son of the Ulysses Grant “Slim” Johnson and Mildred Maud Tiller Johnson. He was a graduate of Oglethorpe County High School and looked forward to attending class reunions each year at G Brand BBQ. Mr. Johnson was a member of Glade United Methodist Church, and was a welder having retired from Westinghouse/ABB after 32 years of service.

Larry thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with his fellow fire fighters working with the Glade Volunteer Fire Department. He dedicated much of his time to help the fire department succeed. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Johnson spent most of his free time hunting deer and turkey, and trapping wild game. He loved his family and friends dearly.

Larry was a devoted “Daddy” to Laura Martin Haley and her husband Wade and a dedicated “Papa” to William Elijah “Eli” Martin and Benjamin Johnson “Ben” Martin. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Chastain and her husband Jimmy of Carlton; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends on Sunday, May 21, from 1:30-2:30p.m. at Fortsonia Baptist Church, 2616 Washington Highway, Elberton. Funeral services will follow at 3:00p.m. at the church with the Rev. Anne Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery. Fireman honors will be provided by the Forsyth County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Buddy Tucker, Elliott Burt, Tyler Farmer, Chris Smith, Bo Tucker, and Dustin Jackson. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Tucker, Dale Porterfield, and Billy Bob Shelnutt.
