Martha Anne Mathews Caldwell

Mrs. Martha Anne Mathews Caldwell, 77, of Bridges Road, Carlton, died Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at her residence following several years of declining health.

Mrs. Caldwell was born in the Hutchins section of Oglethorpe County on May 29, 1944, daughter of the late Richmond Butler "R.B." Mathews and Juanita Glenn Mathews. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and retired from the Oglethorpe County School System after 34 years as a bus driver and cafeteria, and also worked at Elberton Manufacturing Company, Sandy Cross Grocery, and alongside Johnny at Tom’s Place. Martha Anne enjoyed working in her flower gardens and building bird houses. She loved each of her grandchildren dearly.

Survivors include her husband, John Edgar “Johnny” Caldwell; three sons: Kem and Lara Caldwell, Cameron Caldwell, and Greg and Susan Caldwell, all of Carlton; five grandchildren: Blake and Phaelon Caldwell, Bailey Caldwell, Dorianne Caldwell, Blaise Caldwell, and Caden Caldwell; great-grandchildren: Tristin Caldwell and Maddie Caldwell; brother, Doug and Tricia Matthews of Carlton; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Memorial services celebrating her life will be held on Sunday, June 6, at 4 o’clock at Vesta Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Bruce officiating.

The family is at the residence and will greet friends immediately following the service at the church.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
