Martha Jane Lamborn Aston Pool

Mrs. Martha Jane Lamborn Aston Pool, 88, of Athens, GA, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2015, in Crawford, GA. Mrs. Pool was born on October 15, 1927, in Washington D.C., and was raised in Arlington, VA during the Depression Era and World War II. From her home atop Arlington Ridge Road, she could see the Pentagon being built alongside the Potomac River in the early 1940's. Her father, Charles C. Lamborn died when she was young and her mother, Romye Burnes Lamborn raised Martha and her sister Ruth by becoming the first woman Realtor in the Washington, D.C. area. She graduated from William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA, where she met her first husband and father of her children, Lee Aston. She taught English and other subjects for many years, having taught in Elbert, Floyd and Clarke Counties in Georgia. She was much admired and respected by her students. Martha was instrumental in founding a local Elberton, GA theatrical troupe in the 1970's, known as The Pastime Players. She directed and acted in numerous stage productions put on by the group. During her years in Elberton she attended and brought the family up in Elberton's First United Methodist Church. After retiring from teaching, she moved to Athens, GA and became a real estate agent and worked for Upchurch Realty. She excelled at selling real estate and received numerous awards. Martha was a member of Athens First Baptist Church, where she taught an adult Sunday school class. Mrs. Pool married Allan Pool, of Athens, GA in 1983. They lived happily for a number of years before he predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her sister, Ruth Silverthorn, with whom she had always been very close and a granddaughter, Diana Morgan. Mrs. Pool was known affectionately as "Grandma Janie" by her family, having been called Janie as a child because her name was Martha Jane. She loved gardening, cooking, playing games and bridge, the arts, music, traveling, going to the beach and mountains, and her cats. Mrs. Pool is survived by her children: Gary (Linda) Aston of Elberton, GA, their children, Derek (Katie) and Charlotte, and grandchildren: Hayleigh and Lucas Aston; Roger (Grace) Aston of California and their son, Ryan; Robin Aston of Elberton; and Laurel Aston of California, and her daughter Ashley. Memorial services celebrating her life will be held at 3PM on Sunday, November 1, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Dr. Paul Baxley presiding. The family will receive friends from 2-3PM just prior to the service at Berry Funeral Home. At her request the body will be cremated and her remains will be interred at St. Paul's Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. next to her parents. Memorials may be made in her memory to Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346 or to The Children's Cancer Foundation, Inc., 5570 Sterrett Place, Suite 204, Columbia, MD 21044.
