Rachel Louise Sanders Kay

Mrs. Rachel Louise Sanders Kay, 94, of Elizabeth Street, Elberton, wife of the late Joe Travis Kay, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at her residence.

Mrs. Kay was born in Anderson County, SC on June 8, 1927, daughter of the late James Edward Sanders and Montee Turner Sanders. She was a graduate of Rock Branch High School and attended the Georgia Baptist Nursing School in Atlanta. Rachel was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse having worked at Thompson-Johnson Hospital, Elbert Memorial Hospital, and Nancy Hart Nursing Center. In addition, Mrs. Kay previously worked at The Diana Shop on the Elberton Square and at Elberton Manufacturing.

She and her husband Joe were founding members of The Lighthouse (presently Celebration Outreach Center), and worked diligently for the church’s success. Mrs. Kay spend many hours with the children of the church, especially working in the nursery and children’s church. Rachel had also been a member of Elberton Church of God. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and watching television.

Survivors include her children: Kenneth Lee Kay of Elberton, David Alan Kay of Sugar Hill, and Toni Annette Kay Grimes of Comer; grandchildren: Richard Dale Grimes and Dawn of Anderson, SC, Tiffany Annette Grimes Saturday of Comer, and Jessica Kay Quinn and Justin of Royston; and four great-granddaughters.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Larry Joe Kay; and brother, Leo Sanders.

Graveside services celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, March 29, at 2 o’clock at Forest Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Jones officiating.
