Robert Marshall Smith

Robert Marshall Smith, 36, left this life suddenly and way too soon on Monday, May 24, 2021, at his residence in Denver, Colorado, the place he has called home for the past 13 years.

Born on September 18, 1984, in Athens, Georgia, Robert was raised in Elberton, Georgia with his two older siblings. He was a 2003 honor graduate of Elbert County Comprehensive High School and furthered his education at the University of Georgia. Robert was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Elberton.

In February 2008, he relocated to and fell in love with Denver, Colorado, where he attended Community College of Denver having earned an Associates Degree in Accounting. He was currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in accountancy at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Once in Denver, Robert was employed as a locomotive conductor at OmniTraxx, a railroad shipping company, and quickly worked his way to becoming a locomotive engineer. He was later employed with Total Quality Logistics and was currently employed as a Freight Broker with VersaFreight, LLC.

From the time he could walk, Robert has been an avid sportsman. He loved playing baseball, from little league, to high school, on into adulthood. Robert was an avid golfer, enjoyed working out, and playing a good game of soccer, kickball, and softball. He organized and coached a Denver City Adult League Coed Softball team. Robert also enjoyed volunteer work with the foster children of Denver.

Above all, Robert loved his family and friends dearly. He was happiest while traveling, listening to music, or enjoying a concert of any kind. Robert was particularly fond of, and proud to be the uncle of, his niece Taylor and nephew Nicolas. Our hearts are broken with his untimely passing, but we take comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his sister, Susan Amanda Smith; and grandparents: Vernon L. and Gladys Fountain Smith, and Catherine Watkins Cason.

Robert leaves behind his parents, Larry Eugene Smith and Pamela Dianne Cason Smith of Elberton, Georgia; brother, Nicolas Jason Smith of Elberton, Georgia; sister-in-law, Leann Fortson of Elberton, Georgia; niece, Taylor Amanda Smith of Elberton, Georgia; nephew, Nicolas Dylan Smith of Elberton, Georgia; grandfather, Robert W. Cason of Powder Springs, Georgia; and uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends too numerous to name.

The family will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home on Monday, May 31, from 6:00-8:00p.m.
A funeral service celebrating the remarkable life of Robert Smith will be held on Tuesday, June 1, at 3 o’clock (1o'clock Colorado time) at First Baptist Church of Elberton with the Revs. Gary Purvis and Michael Stovall officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park with Reid Wilhite, Josh Wilhite, Adam Campbell, Luke Walker, Carter Thompson, and Zed McLanahan honored as pallbearers. At other times the family will be at the residence of Larry and Pam Smith.

The service will be live-streamed on the First Baptist Church of Elberton, Georgia facebook page.
