Mrs. Ruby Johnson Hammond, 93, of Lavonia, formerly of Elberton, wife of 57 years to the late John Barnwell Hammond, Jr., passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021, at her residence.

A native of Elberton, Mrs. Hammond was born on May 28, 1927 to John Thomas Johnson and Ada Dunbar Johnson, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a retired seamstress and operated an in-home daycare for many years. Mrs. Hammond loved children, flowers, and reading.

Survivors include her children: John Barnwell “Chip” Hammond, Jr. of the residence, Gail Hammond Burgess (Billy) of Lavonia, Robin Hammond Richey (Stan) of Toccoa, and Christi Hammond Ruff (Jeff) of Elberton; grandchildren: Sean Burgess (Amanda), Jonathan Burgess, Tavi Burgess Peeples (Frankie), Brandon Richey, Barkley Richey (Danna), Cameron Ruff, and Channing Ruff; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 11 o’clock at Elmhurst Cemetery with the Rev. Nate Bunner officiating.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.
