Mr. Joe Vernon Gaines, 64, lifelong resident of the Rock Branch Community, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Mr. Gaines was born in Elbert County on June 24, 1950, to the late Joe Fred Gaines and Fannie Ray Bowen Gaines. He was a retired salesman for HT Hackney Company, a U.S. Army Veteran, and a member of the Rock Branch Baptist Church. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Evelyn Lawrence Gaines of the home; two sons: Jason Gaines and Brian Gaines, both of Elberton; two brothers: Billy Gaines and Ray Gaines and his wife Sylvia, all of Elberton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Jackie Craft and her husband Kenneth. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, October 11, at 11:00a.m. in the Rock Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Wright and Ed Sayer officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Gaines will be placed in the church at 10:00a.m. to lie instate until the service hour. The family is at the residence on the Coldwater Road and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00p.m. on Friday evening. Flowers are optional; those desiring may make contributions in Vernon's memory to the Rock Branch Baptist Church, 2150 Coldwater Road, Elberton, Georgia 30635.
