Virginia Carter Rich Martin, 77, of 609 Holly Hills Drive, Hartwell, Georgia wife of John E. Martin, Sr. passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 at Ty Cobb Regional Medical Center in Lavonia, Georgia. Born June 26, 1936 in Williamsburg, SC to the late Evans Wilburn Carter and Mary Gether Graham Carter. She was a member of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church in Hartwell and retired from Pennsylvania Bell Telephone as a supervisor after 32 years where she accomplished being the first woman in management. Virginia was very active and donated her time throughout many different organizations. She was President of Bell Telephone Pioneers, Secretary for Habitat for Humanity of Hartwell, Treasurer for GA Chapter of Telephone Pioneer Family Campers and was the former Chairperson of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church Sunshine Club. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Left to cherish her memories are her husband John E. Martin, Sr. of Hartwell, GA; her children Cindy and Robert Sherwood of Crozet, VA; Joni and Brian Schmidt of Lancaster, PA; Lori Wilson and fiance' Timothy Danz of Landisville, PA; Charles H. Rich, III and Wipa of Hartwell, GA; John E. Martin, Jr. and Beth of East Petersburg, PA and Caroline and John Lawrence of Lancaster, PA; sisters Annie Ruth Sparrow of Hartsville, SC; Ernestine and Gene Sweat of Columbus, SC and Nina and Cecil Tyler of Hemingway, SC and twelve grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sister Leila Mae Bullard and brother William Graham Carter. Memorial services celebrating her life will be held 2PM, Saturday September 14, 2013 at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathleen Deegan-Neal officiating. The Martin family will receive friends and family just prior to the service from 1:30-2 PM at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family has requested please to make memorials in her honor to Liberty Hill United Methodist Church P.O. Box 754 Hartwell, Georgia 30643 or to the American Cancer Society 1684 Barnett Shoals Road Athens, Georgia 30605.
