Mr. Brian Kent Deakin, 56, of Colbert, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 9, 2023, at his residence.
2 Timothy 4:7 says: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Brian embodied this verse. He kept the faith in his Lord and his loved ones, working tirelessly to care for his family and friends. Even after receiving a cancer diagnosis and battling pain in his long struggle, he “fought the good fight” for all he touched. He never complained and often spent more time inquiring how he could help others than how he could be assisted.
Brian never slowed down during his illness, working from his hospital bed and even until the day before he entered hospice care. He continued to care for “his girls” wife, Sherry, and his 10-year-old daughter, Ellie.
He loved his grown sons, Tyler and Matthew, with his whole heart, and bonded with Tyler over their love for the Braves and the Falcons, and Matthew over music and cars. The two recently lost their mother, Carla, and Brian grieved with his sons, who now mourn the loss of both parents within five months.
A Georgia Tech graduate, Brian was highly intelligent and enjoyed a career in industrial engineering in a variety of roles, excelling in each area he tackled from customer service manager, plant manager, regional safety and quality manager, plant manager, and operations manager. His last role was working at Matthews International, a granite company based in Elberton, as both a Safety and Software Manager.
Brian also had a lifelong passion for radio. He hosted his own childhood “radio show” and made a guest appearance on a family member’s show before eventually having his own real show, Country Gold Saturday Night on WSGC-FM 105.3 from 2017 until his passing.
Brian will be sorely missed, but he had a truly positive impact on the lives he touched.
Brian is survived by his wife, Sherry Deakin; sons: Tyler Harry Deakin and Matthew Kent Deakin and his wife Rachael; daughter, Ellie Violet Deakin; and brother, Douglas Glenn Deakin and his wife Georgia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Glenn Deakin and Barbara Ruth Lane Deakin; and Carla Christine Cargal, his former wife and mother of his sons.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, 1265 Washington Highway, Elberton, GA 30635.
Memorial services celebrating Brian’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 18, at 11 a.m. at Colbert Baptist Church, 65 S 5th Street, Colbert, GA 30628. The service will be live-streamed via colbertbaptistchurch.org. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Contributions may be made in Brian’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
