Mr. Curtis Eugene Algood, 89, of Sunset Drive, Elberton, passed away on Friday morning, March 13, 2026, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of 61 years to Sandra Cornelia Gunter Algood.
The youngest of three, Curtis was born at home in Elberton on July 24, 1936, son of the late Thomas Hoyt Algood and Jewel Christine Jones Algood. He was a 1955 graduate of Elberton High School and, during his sophomore year, played during the first ever football game held in the Granite Bowl. Curtis served his country faithfully in the United States Army, and was a member of Fortsonia Baptist Church.
He worked as an electrician most of his life. Never one to stay idle, Curtis enjoyed working security at Elbert Memorial Hospital and Richard B. Russell State Park, as well as a jailer at Elbert County Detention Center after his retirement. He enjoyed camping and was well-known for making homemade Brunswick stew.
Along with his beloved wife Sandra, Curtis is survived by three sons and their wives: Jeff and Gwen Algood of Hartwell, Craig and Missy Algood of Elberton, and Chad and Crystal Algood of Elberton; grandchildren: Jake Algood, Justin Algood, Kaytlyn Mills and her husband McCloud, and Lauren Fleeman; great-grandchildren: Avery Algood and Memphis Mills; and sister-in-law, Patricia Algood.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Polly Pitts and her husband Bobby; and brother, Milford Algood.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends on Sunday, March 15, from 1:30p.m. until 2:30p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Andrew Danals, will follow at 3:00p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Flowers are accepted, and contributions may be made in his memory to Fortsonia Baptist Church, 2616 Washington Highway, Elberton, GA 30635.
