Mrs. Elaine Madden Johnson Gunter, 79, of Elberton, wife of 51 years to the late James ‘Larry’ Gunter, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital following a sudden illness.

Elaine was born in Elberton on March 25, 1947, daughter of the late Alonzo Wilton Johnson and Lizzie Lee Madden Johnson. She was a graduate of Elberton High School and was a member of Fortsonia Baptist Church.

Elaine worked as an LPN for most of her life. She spent many years in the OBGYN department at Elbert Memorial Hospital where she helped deliver countless babies, as well as in the emergency room. Elaine also worked at Hart County Hospital, Ty Cobb Memorial Hospital, Elberton Medical Center, Heardmont Nursing Home, and Nancy Hart Nursing Home. She retired from Spring Valley Nursing Home where she worked for many years.

In her free time, Elaine spent many hours cultivating beautiful flower gardens throughout her perfectly manicured yard and tending to her many house plants. She never passed up an opportunity to go shopping or play games, with a special love of rummy. Her favorite downtime was spending time at beach.

Elaine is survived by her two sons: Mark Gunter and his wife Jennifer of The Dalles, OR and Van Gunter of Elberton; brothers: Max Johnson and Johnny Johnson, both of Elberton; grandchildren: Ryan Gunter, Will Gunter, Masyn Gunter, and Adisyn Gunter; great-grandchildren: Amora Jane Gunter and Zeke Gunter; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Along with her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Phyllis Jones, Patricia Rice, Hilda Allen, and Phillip Johnson.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 27, from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.
