Ferlin Wayne Smith

Ferlin Wayne Smith, 56, of Elberton, died peacefully, while surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital.

Ferlin was born in Royston on March 22, 1967, the second of five children of Johnny Wayne Smith and Sharon Dean Moon Smith. He worked in the construction and granite industries, and is most remembered from his time at Rutherford’s Pyramid Quarries. Outside of work, Ferlin enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family, friends, and grand-dogs Lilly and Eazy. He was a member of Rock Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Stacey Elaine McBride Smith of Elberton; daughter and his pride and joy, Hannah Joy Smith James and her husband Bryar of Monroeville, AL; mother, Sharon Moon Smith of Bowman; siblings and their spouses: Tina and Richard Jones of Hartwell, Craig Smith of Bowman, Maranda and Hall West of Bowman, and Chadd and Lorie Smith of Bowman; parents-in-law, Robert and Peggy McBride of Elberton; sister-in-law, Sandie McBride of Elberton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his father, Johnny Wayne Smith.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends on Friday, December 8, from 5:00-7:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.

Memorial services celebrating Ferlin’s life will be held on Saturday, December 9, at 2:00p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Vaughn officiating.

The family request those attending to please dress casually.  His favorite color was purple, which exemplifies the wisdom and intuition he was blessed to share with all those who loved him.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to Hope Lodge Atlanta, 1552 Shoup Court, Decatur, GA 30033. Hope Lodge provides lodging for cancer patients and their families, and was a blessing to Ferlin and his family during his treatment at Emory Winship Cancer Institute.
