George Earl Oglesby

Mr. George “Earl” Oglesby, a lifelong resident of Elberton, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the age of 87.

Earl built a life rooted in faith and marked by hard work, honesty and service. He was employed by Harmony Blue Granite Company and proudly served in the National Guard. He also owned and operated Oglesby Gun Shop.

Earl was a man of strong character who loved his family, his church, and the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed going to church and generously sharing his maintenance and cooking skills at Francis Asbury Methodist Church. He also loved singing praise hymns, dancing with friends in Hartwell and Lowndesville, and going out to eat. Earl especially treasured his time at Southern Farm & Hardware, where he visited and talked with his buddies. He was always willing to lend a hand and took great joy in serving his church and community.

Earl was the son of the late George Oglesby and Clara Swords Oglesby. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 47 years, Carolyn ”Cacky” Grimes Oglesby, and their son, Gregory Earl Oglesby. Earl is survived by his sister, Julia Ann McVinnie and brother-in-law Brian as well as extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, August 16, at 2 p.m. at Francis Asbury Methodist Church in Elberton. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., with Reverend Tim Savelle officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Francis Asbury Methodist Church at P.O. Box 553, Elberton, Georgia 30635. Donations may also be made to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in memory of Earl and Carolyn’s son, Gregory Earl Oglesby, at 1575 NE Expressway, Atlanta, Georgia 30329.
