Gloria Annette Fleming Slay, 75, of Lee County, GA, died Friday, September 22, 2023, at The Miller County Hospital after a prolonged illness of Neuro Myelitis Optica and Transverse Myelitis.
Gloria was born in Elberton, GA on December 5, 1947, to the late Joseph and Audrey Fleming and grew up in the Centerville Community. She adored her granddaddy, Otto Fleming who had a gentle spirit and taught her about the love of Jesus. Gloria graduated from Elbert County High School in 1965.
Gloria and Ray Slay were high school sweethearts and married in 1967. She worked as a seamstress to help put Ray through college. Gloria was a homemaker while their girls were little and later was employed by The United States Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier for twenty-six years in Douglasville, GA. After retiring from the Postal Service, she moved to Lee County in 2010 to be closer to her grandchildren.
Gloria was a member of Gillionville Baptist Church. She enjoyed volunteering at church, flower gardening, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren. Gloria also enjoyed visiting and corresponding with friends from church, the post office, and high school.
Gloria was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She had a feisty spirit and fought hard to overcome a debilitating illness over the past year. Gloria is now with Jesus and her granddaddy, whom she loved dearly.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Ray Slay of Lee County, GA; two daughters: Tammy Slay (Christopher Meek) of Marietta, GA and Lisa Marie (Stewart) Whittaker of Albany, GA; sister, Shirley Yeargin of Conyers, GA; two grandchildren: Grayson and Lindsey Whittaker; sisters-in-law: Barbie Slay McCannon, Elizabeth Slay, and Linn Slay Mills; brothers-in-law: Tim Slay, Stan Mills, and Roger McCannon; and many nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 25, from 10:00-10:45a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home in Albany. Funeral services will follow at 11:00a.m. in the Mathews Chapel.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 26, from 10:00-10:45a.m. at Berry Funeral Home in Elberton. Graveside services will follow at 11:00a.m. in the Forest Hills Memorial Park.
