Mr. Harley Lee Thomason, 86, of Elberton, GA, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Spring Valley Nursing Home. Mr. Thomason was born on August 24, 1936, in Dawkins, South Carolina to the late Harley Milton Thomason and Alice Josephine Darnell Thomason. He graduated from Elbert County High School, where baseball and football became lifelong passions of his. Mr. Thomason was awarded an athletic scholarship to play baseball at Berry College which he attended for two years. His love of football, especially the Georgia Bulldogs, continued throughout his life. He loved to hunt and fish and was a member “Happy Hour Hunting Lodge” in Oglethorpe, GA for several years before his decline in health. Mr. Thomason was also a member of the former Moose Lodge of Elberton. During his working years, he was a man in the tire business. After he served in the Army from 1959 – 1961, he, along with his father and brother, opened the Standard Service Station and operated it until the late 70’s. They sold that business and established a full-service filling station called Thomason Phillips 66. It stayed in business until the late 80’s. Mr. Thomason then went to work for John Duncan Tire as a Tire Technician. He loved his family, especially his son who was his pride and joy, and always enjoyed a piece of candy, especially a Milky Way. Mr. Thomason was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Angela Dawn Thomason; brother, James M. Thomason; two sisters, Adeatha Rousey and Judy Dickerson; as well as his grandson, Harley Kane Thomason. He is survived by his son, James “Jim” Thomason, and his wife, Mary; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. The family of Mr. Thomason would like to extend their deepest thanks to the nurses and staff of Spring Valley Nursing Home for the love and care they provided during the later years of Mr. Thomason’s life. A memorial service honoring Mr. Thomason’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
