Herman Harold Johnson

Mr. Herman Harold Johnson, 86, of Chamblee, GA, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2026, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He was the husband of Mary Lovelace Fortson Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was born in Hartwell, GA on November 10, 1939, and was raised in Elberton, GA. After graduating from Elberton High School, he joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country.

Herman worked as a self-employed over-the-road truck driver, delivering produce to every continental state. After his retirement, he and son Gary operated a trucking brokerage company until his final retirement in the early 2000s. Herman was a lifelong Methodist by faith, and an avid gardener, arguably having grown the best tomatoes around. He was a diehard University of Georgia Bulldog fan, but his most favorite thing in life was being “PaPa” to his grandson Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Melissa Johnson of Atlanta; grandson, Taylor Johnson of Atlanta; siblings: Joe and Margaret Johnson of Elberton, Harriet Zorc of Savannah, and Deanie Milligan of Johns Creek; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Herman is preceded in death by his mother, Ida Elizabeth Bryant Shaw; step-father, Holcomb Shaw; father, Hubert Herman “Jack” Johnson; and siblings: Mary Wood, Charles Johnson, and Betty Miller.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 22, from 2:00-2:45p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3:00p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in Herman’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
