Horace Smith Adams

Horace Smith Adams, a resident of Elberton for 98 years, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. Born and raised in Elberton, Horace was the son of the late Robert Ernest and Ethel Smith Adams.

Mr. Adams served the City of Elberton as the Superintendent of the Gas Department for many years until his retirement. A proud veteran, he honorably served in the US Army during World War II, a testament to his commitment to his country. He was also a devoted member of Harmony Baptist Church.

Horace is preceded in death by his loving wife of 74 years, Betty Jo Higginbotham Adams; his children: Brenda Adams and Beverly Ward; and his siblings: Inman Adams, Robert E. Adams, Jr., Owen Adams, Elise Mabry, Frances Edwards, Emily Worley, and Mary Lea Bell.

He will be fondly remembered by his surviving children: Susan (John) Fernandez and Steve (Mary) Adams; and a son-in-law, Mike Ward. He also leaves a legacy of love in his seven grandchildren: Jennifer Edmonds, Lori (Taylor) Tom, Daniel (Jennifer) Edmonds, Scott (Brandy) Adams, Matthew (Brandy) Adams, Wesley Ward, and Ashley Ward. Additionally, he is survived by ten great-grandchildren: Maddox Adams, Kayleigh Adams, Carson Tom, Camden Tom, Colton Tom, Rylan Adams, Braelyn Adams, Henzlee Adams, Delaney Edmonds, and Ridge Edmonds; and one great-great-grandchild, Miller Adams.

A memorial service to celebrate Horace's life will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 2 pm in the Berry Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 pm to 2 pm, prior to the service. Reverends Taylor Tom and Dan Fernandez will officiate the service. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.
