John Brooks Jennings

Mr. John Brooks Jennings, 74, of Elberton, GA died December 23, 2023.

Born at home in Columbia, SC, John was one of three sons born to William Broadus “Bill” Jennings and Flora Veola Rogers Jennings. He was a 1967 graduate of Eau Claire High School and a 1972 graduate of the University of Georgia. John had the time of his life playing under legendary coach Vince Dooley, serving as offensive left guard from 1968-1971, proudly wearing #68. He then played for the Calgary Stampeders in Calgary, Alberta, Canada until an injury ended his football career. John would continue to follow his passion of football, working as a coach and recruiter for the University of Georgia, Clarke Central High School, Austin Peay University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Kentucky. He was a proud member of the Georgia Football Letterman’s Club where he served on the Board of Trustees.

He entered into the transportation industry in 1979, working as terminal manger in Macon, GA, Columbia, SC, and Athens, GA, retiring in 2013 after 34 years of service. Never one to stay idle, John quickly began searching for a second career. He landed at After Hours DUI School in Athens, GA where he quickly fell in love with his work as an instructor. He was passionate about helping individuals reach their sobriety goals and never missed an opportunity to celebrate their achievements.

Above all, John was a family man. His devotion to Beverly was second to none. He enjoyed working along side Jessie at 68 Market in Elberton, GA and never missed an opportunity to go fishing or play a game of golf with Will. He loved being “Duke” to his grandchildren, Leo and Lane. John’s sense of humor and quick wittedness will remain in the hearts of his family.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Beverly Carpenter Jennings; children: Jessica and James Anglin of Danielsville, GA and William Jennings of Dawsonville, GA; grandchildren, Leo Anglin and Lane Anglin of Danielsville, GA; and brother, Phillip Jennings of Irmo, SC. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Roger Jennings.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 28, from 5:00-7:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, 1265 Washington Highway, Elberton, GA.
