Linda Clementine Johnson Chastain

Mrs. Linda Clementine Johnson Chastain, age 85, of Carlton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Piedmont Hospital in Athens, Georgia.

Linda was born on June 13, 1940, at her family home in Glade (Carlton), Georgia, to Ulysses Grant Johnson and Mildred Maud Tiller Johnson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, James Charles “Jimmy” Chastain of Carlton, Georgia; two children: Brian Keith Chastain of Mt. Washington, Kentucky and Regina Carole Chastain of Stockbridge, Georgia; and one brother, Larry Ulysses Johnson of Carlton, Georgia.

Linda attended Glade United Methodist Church in her former years and Community Bible Church in her later years.

She was a bookkeeper for many years at Williams Brothers’ Lumber Company, retired from LaFarge North America, Inc. in 1989, and then worked for Sam’s Club (Walmart Corporation) for another 20 years. After retiring from Walmart Corporation, Linda and Jimmy returned to Glade in Oglethorpe County, Linda’s homeplace, in 2020 to reside with their daughter, Susan, and her husband, Garry Shaw.

Besides being a hard worker, she loved shopping, traveling, preparing homemade meals for her family, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She found much joy in giving gifts to them all. To many, Linda will be fondly remembered for her witty sense of humor, many, many funny stories from her life and travels, and the comfort and love she shared with her family and many friends. Linda never met a stranger and made everyone feel like her best friend.

Linda leaves one daughter, Susan (Garry) Shaw of Carlton, Georgia; six grandchildren: Adrian (Andrew) Mitchell of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Keith Chastain of Stockbridge, Georgia, Ashley (Jared) Moon of Gainesville, Georgia, Jennifer (Josh) Johns of Comer, Georgia, Ryan (Kirsten) Chastain of Shepherdsville, Kentucky, and Brandon (Victoria) Chastain of Social Circle, Georgia; fifteen great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends. All will greatly miss her.

The family invites you to celebrate Linda’s life on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 3p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home in Elberton, Georgia. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.
