Major Henry Edward Hammond, Jr., US Army, Retired

Major Henry Edward Hammond, Jr., US Army, Retired, died on Monday, August 28, 2023, at his home in Bowman, Georgia. Husband of Janice Carol Davis Hammond, Henry was 78 years old.

Henry was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1945, son of the late Henry Edward Hammond, Sr. and Anna Dudzek Hammond. The family relocated to Mr. Hammond, Sr.’s hometown of Elberton at the breakout of WWII where Henry was raised. He graduated Elbert County High School in 1963 and joined the United States Army. Henry served his country faithfully for 20 years, being the proud recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

Following Henry's service in Vietnam, the Army sent him to the University of Tampa, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1975. Henry moved back to Elberton with the hopes of enjoying retirement, hunting, fishing, and taking care of his parents. Little did he know that a blind date would introduce him to Janice Carol Davis, who would soon become his wife. Henry and Janice settled in Bowman and became members of Victory Baptist Church. He worked for the Elbert County 911 Dispatch and the United States Postal Service in Athens.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Janice; children: Shannon Hammond of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Mary Hammond of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Carmen Shadron of Loveland, Ohio, Henry ‘Edward’ Hammond, III of Bowman, Georgia, and Anna Hammond of Bowman, Georgia; brother, Andrew Hammond of Bastrop, Texas; brothers-in-law: Clarke and Peggy Davis of Elberton, Georgia and Gene and Jackie Davis of Carnesville, Georgia; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and twelve nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Hammond Moore.
