Martha Lee Fleming Jones

Mrs. Martha Lee Fleming Jones, 82, of Grady Cleveland Road, Elberton, wife of the late Stockton Elliott Jones, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Born on July 10, 1943, Martha Lee spent her entire life in the Sweet City community she loved so dearly. A proud 1961 graduate of Elbert County High School, she worked at Woolworth’s store on the Elberton Square where she met Stockton, the available son of the “floor supervisor lady” and toy department head who actually had designs on match-making him with Martha Lee’s older sister. Much to her future mother-in-law’s surprise, they were married on December 29 of that same year, beginning a partnership that would span more than five decades.

Martha Lee often described her upbringing as simple and country, but she possessed a rare combination of wit, wisdom, determination, and grace. Raised in a simpler time without electricity, television, or even a telephone for much of her childhood, she learned early the values of hard work, faith, and family. Her stories of growing up on the family farm—fox hunting with her father, helping with livestock, attending Doves Creek School, and worshipping at Doves Creek Baptist Church—became treasured memories shared with generations of family and friends.

A devoted wife and mother, Martha Lee dedicated herself to creating a loving home for her children, Sonya and David. Whether sewing to help support the family, transporting children to school and activities, or cheering from the sidelines of countless 4-H events, she never missed an opportunity to invest in the lives of those she loved. She often said she had no regrets about the sacrifices she made to be present during her children's formative years, considering them among life's greatest blessings.

Martha Lee held a variety of jobs aligned with her family priorities throughout her career, including positions in banking, bookkeeping, and the granite industry. However, she is perhaps best remembered for the many years she served as a paraprofessional with the Elbert County School System. The number of children who learned to read through her tutelage is immeasurable, although ironically, she rarely spent time pleasure reading herself (aside from countless completed word search books, of which she was a great fan!)

Faith was the cornerstone of Martha Lee's life. A lifelong member of Doves Creek Baptist Church, she served as a choir member, Vacation Bible School volunteer, and active participant in the life of her church community. In later years, she enjoyed the fellowship and friendships she found at Elberton Christian Church. Her faith sustained her through the many challenges she faced, including significant health battles that she often referred to as her "extra lives" that God’s good hand guided her through.

Martha Lee was also deeply committed to her larger community devoting countless hours to Georgia 4-H, preserving and renovating the Wilhite Community Center, affectionately known as the Doves Creek Gym, and ensuring that future generations would continue to benefit from experiences and places that held so many cherished memories for her.

Perhaps her greatest joy came from being "Grandmama." She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, delighting in their accomplishments and milestones. Whether attending performances and ballgames, offering advice, sharing stories, or simply spending time together (preferably in her home, where it seemed to count more), she poured her love generously into each of their lives.

Survivors include her daughter, Sonya Lee (Allen) of Elberton; son, David Jones (Stacy) of Monroe; grandchildren, Elliott Lee (Blair), Hendley Jones, and Kaylor Jones; great-grandchildren, Essie and Stockton Lee; sister, Pam Peace (Jack) of Easley, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Stockton, her parents, Renno David “Doc” Fleming and Hilda Moore Fleming; and her sister, Joyce Furcron (Robert).

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 27, from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Elberton Christian Church. Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Rick Cox, will follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be alongside her husband and parents in Doves Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family is at the residence and will receive friends there.
