Max J. Cobo

Mr. Max J. Cobo, age 90, of Washington Highway, Elberton, husband of Jo Ann Ray Cobo, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Augusta University Medical Center. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after suffering a stroke on the previous Saturday. 

Born in Elberton on June 9, 1933, Max Joe Cobo was a son of the late Mike Mateo Cobo and Sarah Canales Cobo. He was a 1950 graduate of Elberton High School. After one year of commercial schooling, Max joined the United States Air Force and served faithfully for four years. He joined his father-in-law, Claude Ray, at Claude Ray Ford Sales after returning home from service. Max eventually joined his brother-in-law, Bobby Dean, at Dean Motor Company before fulfilling his goal of opening his own dealership. Cobo Auto Sales was born as a result and has served generations of Elbertonians. 

Max was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Elberton and supported the church faithfully. He was a former member of the Jaycees, Elks Lodge, and Elberton County Club. An avid outdoorsman, Max loved fishing and sports ball of any kin. In his younger years, he was known for his outstanding pingpong abilities. Max’s favorite pastime was being on the golf course with his buddies. 

He was devoted to his family and was the best “DaDaddy” to his grandchildren. Surviving, in addition to his wife of 69 years and sweetheart of 75 years, Jo Ann, are his sons: Carey Cobo and Donnie Cobo (Jackie), all of Elberton; grandchildren: Christa Michelle Cobo of Athens, Ryan Maxwell Cobo (Katie) of Thomson, and Justin Daniel Cobo (Jessica) of Macon; great-grandchildren: Remington Kathryn Cobo, Maxwell Thomas Cobo, and Oliver William Cobo; brother, Richard Cobo of Thomaston; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.  

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings: Anita Webb, Louis Cobo, and Mitchell Cobo.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends on Saturday, August 5, from 10:00-10:45.am. at Berry Funeral Home.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday at 11:00a.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Adams officiating. Interment will be private in Elmhurst Cemetery. 

Honorary pallbearers will include Ed Shive, Steve Jenkins, Jack Norman, Darwyn Kelley, and Kevin Hunt. 

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church of Elberton, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635.
