Mr. Oscar Howard Dixon, 85, of Indian Hill Road, Elberton, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by the love of his family.
The third of five children, he was born in Elberton on October 14, 1940, son of the late Henry Howard Dixon and Julia Eugenia Smith Dixon. Having lived his entire life on Indian Hill Road, Oscar graduated from Nancy Hart High School in 1958 and served his country faithfully in the Army National Guard. On December 14, 1969, he married Susie Christine Moon, and they spent nearly 56 years of being devoted to one another and raising a wonderful family that grew to include five children, fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
As a young man, Oscar worked for the lumberyard in Calhoun Falls. He is most remembered as a telephone cable repairman, having worked for Southern Bell/BellSouth/ATT for 41 years. Oscar was a lifelong member of Falling Creek Baptist Church. He loved his church family and served in many capacities, including secretary, Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon, cemetery chairman, and brotherhood member.
Oscar was an avid gardener who never missed an opportunity to share the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He was a sports fan and enjoyed playing basketball and tennis, and coached his children throughout their years of playing basketball and softball. Above all, he enjoyed being with his family.
Along with his wife, Susie, he is survived by his children: Christel (Lee) Hall of Colbert, Tiffanie (Randall) Ruff of Elberton, Farren (Stephanie) Dixon of Elberton, and Jansen Dixon of Decatur; and siblings: Jimmie Bell, George Dixon, and Cyndie Blanford, all of Elberton. Granddaddy also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Taylor Hall, Aaron (Jessie) Hall, Daniel Hall, Jacob Hall, Landon Hall, Sabrina Brown, Dalton Brown, Corbin Brown, Justin Brown, Garrett (Cameron) Ruff, Deanna (Levi) Garland, Maelynn Ruff, Chase Dixon, and Cadence Dixon; and four great-grandchildren: Charly Hall, Zachary Blackmon, Charlotte Garland, and Abigail Garland.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Dixon Brown; and brother, Neal Dixon.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends on Sunday, November 30, 2025, from 6:00-8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.
Funeral services celebrating Oscar's life will be conducted on Monday, December 1, at 11:00a.m. at Falling Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Creason officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
