Phillip Eugene "Gene" Burton

Mr. Phillip Eugene "Gene" Burton, 88, of Elberton, husband of 48 years to Phyllis Jane Chamberlain Simpson Burton, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Hartwell.

Gene was born in Tignall on October 1, 1935, son of the late Willie Lawrence Burton and Effie Elizabeth Seymour Burton. He was self-employed in the granite and rental industries. Gene was a member of Mallorysville Baptist Church and attended First Baptist Church of Elberton a member of the Granite City Square Dancers and Sons of the American Revolution. He enjoyed flying his plane, old cars, going on trips especially to Myrtle Beach and he loved people.

Surviving, in addition to his wife Phyllis, are his step-daughter, Susan Broadwell and her husband Charles “Chip” Broadwell; step-granddaughter, Kara Broadwell and her fiancé Ryan Rivera, step-great-grandson: Kaleb Rivera and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.  

In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Raye Burton; and siblings: Irene Bradley, W.L. Burton, Jr., Raymond Burton, Julian Burton, Gerald Burton, and Hugh Burton.

Funeral services to celebrate Gene’s life will be held 11AM, Friday, February 9 in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral with Rev. Gary Purvis and Rev. Barry McAvoy officiating. Interment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery with Allen Burton, Joe Burton, Ryan Burton, Bob Burton, Mark Hammond and Bill Hammond serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5PM to 7PM Thursday evening February 8 at Berry Funeral Home.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Gene’s sitter Bernard “James” Ellison and the staff at Brookdale Memory Care Team.
