Richard Lanier "Rickey" Johnson

Mr. Richard Lanier “Rickey” Johnson, 65, of Bakers Ferry Road, Elberton, husband of Patti Childs Johnson, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Rickey was born in Elberton on June 27, 1956, son of Fan Scarborough Johnson and the late Billy Ostell Johnson, and was also preceded in death by his brother, Byron Kent Johnson. He was a member of the 1974 graduating class of Elbert County High School as well as Eliam United Methodist Church. Rickey worked for New England Diamond Company, McLanahan Crushed Stone, and was currently employed by Georgia Stone Products.

A true servant at heart, Rickey devoted much of his time to the people of Elbert County. He worked as a fireman for the City of Elberton and was a volunteer fireman for Elbert County Fire Department - Station 2 - in the Fortsonia Community. Rickey was also an Elbert County First Responder and was privileged to have been selected as 1996 First Responder of the Year.

“Rick Rick”, as he was commonly known, enjoyed boating, cooking a meal, and having a good ole time! Many days were spent on his John Deer Tractor, cutting grass, enjoying a ride on his Polaris ranger, and most recently entertaining “My Boys” on “SnapChap”. He was his daughter’s biggest cheerleader, always supporting them in any of their endeavors. His three granddaughters were the apples of his eye, and he looked forward to surprising them with donuts every Saturday morning.

He is survived by his wife, Patti; daughters: Brittney Johnson Berryman and Jarrett of Hartwell and Breanne Johnson Ferrell and Cole of Elberton; mother, Fan, of Elberton; granddaughters: Presley Berryman, Carter Ferrell, and Rylee Ferrell; and numerous other relatives and friends.

A time of visitation celebrating Rickey’s life will be held on Thursday, September 2, from 5:00-8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. At other hours the family will be at the home. Rickey was adamant that he did not want a formal service, and the family is honoring his request. He will be laid to rest with his father and brother at Forest Hills Memorial Park during a private ceremony.

Contributions may be made in his memory to T.J. & Friends Foundation, Friends Helping Friends, and Elbert County Humane Society Barney Fund.
