Miss Tommye Ruth Mauldin, 78, of Fred Prince Drive, Elberton, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at her residence.
The second of three girls, Tommye was born in Elberton on April 10, 1948. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Marvin Mauldin and Fannie Ruth Prince Mauldin; sister, Patricia Belle Mauldin Childs; and nephews and nieces: Eric Childs, Larry Gene Childs, Jr., Tricia Pless, and Erin Jones. Surviving are her sister and devoted caretaker, Jo Mauldin of Elberton; nieces and nephews: Tammy Childs, Cheryl Childs, Bubba Childs, Wayne (Nancy) Childs, Tracey Riner, and Rusty (Angela) Childs; and generations of great nieces and nephews.
Tommye was a 1966 graduate of Elberton High School and attended Athens Technical College during its inaugural year, graduating in 1967 as a lab technician. After graduating ATC, she moved to Atlanta where she worked for the Center for Disease Control (CDC) until moving back to Elberton in 1978 to help care for her ill sister and nieces and nephews. Once back in Elberton, Tommye worked for the Elbert County Extension Office before going into the home health field. After working for Health Masters, she went to work for Athens Regional Hospital’s Home Health division, retiring as a secretary in 2013.
Tommye was a devoted member of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed reading and working puzzles. Although she had no children of her own, she, along with her sister Jo, devoted her life to caring for generations of nieces and nephews as if they were her own.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 3, from 1:00p.m. until 1:45p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Bobby Dunaway, will follow at 2:00p.m. in the funeral home chapel. She will be laid to rest alongside her parents in Elberton’s Historic Elmhurst Cemetery.
Flowers are accepted, and contributions may be made in her memory to Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2353 Dr. George Ward Road, Elberton, GA 30635.
