Vellon Olivia Carithers McClain

Vellon Olivia Carithers McClain died at the age of 90 in her home on Brookwood Circle in Elberton, GA on December 25, 2023, with her daughter June by her side. She was born in Madison County, GA in 1933 to William Harvey Carithers and Fay Melindie Brown Carithers.  She was married to Levie Russell McClain until his death in 2015, and they lived in Madison County during their marriage. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judy; stepson, William McClain; sisters: Cora Melindie, Alice Hayes, Sue Phillips, and Mary Ann Poorman; and brother, William Alfred Carithers. Along with her daughter June, she is survived by her stepdaughter, Barbara Travis; sister, Brenda (Robert) Kirker; and brother, Bobby Lee Carithers as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Vellon worked for 14 years at Blue Bell Sewing Plant in Comer, GA where she was employed to sew blue jeans until she developed a severe allergy to the dyes used in the fabric. She then worked as a bindery equipment operator for 19 years at the Vocational Education Materials Center at the University of Georgia. She was well liked by her coworkers and became friends with many of them. 

After her retirement, Vellon left Athens and went to live with her daughter June in Jesup, GA. From there they both moved to Braselton, GA, then to Winder, GA, and finally to Elberton, GA. 

Vellon enjoyed many hobbies including reading, playing video games, and jigsaw puzzles. She was a great sketch artist and a wonderful creative story teller. Vellon loved her cats and two of them stayed by her side during her final days. 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 30, from 10:00-10:45a.m. at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00a.m. in the funeral home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tim Adams. Interment will follow in Vineyards Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Comer, GA.
