William Douglas "Peckerwood" Mathews

Mr. William ‘Douglas’ Mathews, affectionately known as “Peckerwood”, 83, of Bridges Road, Carlton, husband of 46 years to Patricia Ann Cofer Mathews, entered into rest on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at his residence.

Doug was born in Oglethorpe County on July 23, 1942, son of the late Richmond Butler “R.B.” Mathews and Juanita Glenn Mathews. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. A granite draftsman by trade, Doug retired from Reliance Granite Company after many years of service.

He was an avid outdoorsman. Doug enjoyed woodworking, rabbit hunting, and fishing. He loved his dogs, especially Daisy.

In addition to his beloved Tricia and his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Martha Anne Caldwell. Doug is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 20, from 1:00-1:45p.m. at Burt’s United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00p.m. in the church. He will be laid to rest following the service in the church cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions may be made in his memory to Burts United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Sherry Mathews, 44 Eberhardt Road, Carlton, GA 30627.

Mr. Mathews’ family would like to thank the exceptional staff at Christopher’s Bridge Home Care and Compassus Hospice for their services, and with deep gratitude wishes to thank Doris Hitchcock and Lashandra Wymbs for their kind and loving care during the last weeks.
